Trout depend on streams

Trout spawn in gravel at the bottom of streams. The flowing water keeps the water cool and fresh, allowing the eggs to develop.

After hatching, the young fish (smolt) feed on insects. The rocks in the water help protect them from prey.

Upstream from the bridge you can see the gravel beds that have been built for spawning, and downstream from the bridge you can see the bigger rocks that hide the smolt.

If you look closely from the bridge, you might see the smolt.

”Rapids oxygenate the water, while food drops from the overhanging trees – the stream is full of life!”
