An unhindered lifecycle for migratory fish

Wild salmon and trout are quite rare in Finland’s rivers and streams. Obstacles, dams and dredging have made many of our waterways unsuitable for migratory fish.

Fortunately, some of these waterways are being restored in the interests of the fish. At the same time, this restoration work is helping to revitalise the overall natural environment of our rivers and streams.

Longinoja is a fine example of a successful restoration project. Since 2001, the restoration work has helped endangered trout return to the stream.

Fish eggs overwinter in the gravel.

Ensimmäiset kuukaudet vietämme ihan kutusoraikon tuntumassa

”I think I’ll stay right where I am.” ”I’m going to the sea!”
After about 3 years, the smolt turn silver and migrate to the sea.

I will fish and grow by 1-3 kilos a year
if I can avoid the nets!

”If only I could get back to my home gravel to spawn in!”
Trout swim upriver to spawn.

”Trout are migratory fish.”
Trout spawn in the autumn.
