Spring floods nurture the stream

Spring floods are good for streams. They help clean out the water and spread nutrients to the plants along the banks. Flood meadows store the water and help stabilise the flow.

Embankments prevent floodwater from covering residential areas.

Drainage ditches and storm drains flood streams with rainwater in an instant. Sudden changes in flow cause erosion.

Slowing down the stormwater can control flows.

You are walking on recycled materials. The foundation for this pedestrian and bicycle path is made from 700 tonnes of shredded car tyres.

This structure serves as a flood barrier between the Longinoja stream and the Savela residential district. The floodwater is kept away from the buildings and spreads instead onto the opposite meadow.
